SMART PORTS WITHOUT WORKERS
The future is here.
The massification and incessant growth of international trade has pushed logistics operators to innovate and establish more efficient and eco-friendly ways to satisfy the requirements of the global market.
Thus, shipping companies now have enormous #MEGAMAX" type ships with a capacity of up to 24,346 TEUs such as the #MSC Loreto" with a length of 399.9 meters and beam of 60 meters, whose design and propulsion technology allows it a significant fuel savings. This ship can also transport 2,024 reefer containers.
Therefore, vessels with these dimensions, which require being loaded with six cranes simultaneously, must be operated 24/7 all year in the most efficient way possible to avoid unnecessary delays and costs, complying with the offered transit time.
The ports' response has been automation. Several terminals around the world are already classified as "Smart port" and operate almost 100% autonomously. These ports have integrated technologies such as:
✅ Autonomous electric vehicles SPV (Special purpose vehicle)
✅ Remotely Operated Cranes
✅ Autonomous container gantry cranes (RMG)
✅ Positioning or georeference technology.
✅ Artificial intelligence.
✅ Augmented reality
✅ IoT data
✅ Smart access control with artificial vision cameras
✅ All this orchestrated in control towers connected under 5G technology.
This is how ports like #Rotterdam are preparing to receive the first autonomous ship in 2030, as well as the new port of #Chancay in Peru to be inaugurated at the end of this year that will operate 100% automated.
🔎 Does all this indicate that we will soon see ports without workers?
